The hike – solitude

The Hike – attempting spontaneity, playfulness and atmospheric impressions during perseverance and solitude

I’ve been thinking more about the presentation of the project. I have three main themes:

perseverance – pictures include the trail in the composition

solitude – pictures include a bench (metafor). This post shows a couple of these pictures.

impressions – this I have to work out in further themes and make choices what to include and what not. A bit more thought needed when I will restart the project. For this year I finished hiking until the winter is over.

Reflection

A lot of things go around in my head, an internal struggle. Difficult to write about as it is a kind of standstill without much handhold. I keep developing as a photographer. I just don’t know what to do in live. I have to break out, but don’t know how to do that yet.

Reflection

I’ve been thinking a lot about the positive aspects of solitude. This in relation to my project ‘long-distance-hiking’.

I’m getting more and more out of looking at long term projects of others, even if I don’t like the pictures. The commitment and thoughts of the concerning photographers inspire me.

On a more personal note: More questions than answers

When i started traveling I came to life, but the experience killed me. All I knew turned out to be insufficient. All I know is doubt. Joy isn’t careless, astonishment awakes annoyance, reconciliations in nothingness overtake pleasures. No vessels burned behind me, no desire to return. Pursuing simple life doesn’t make life simple. It becomes a choice between switching on and off. A choice between being aware and burn or float in the unfulfilling stream of the unaware.

If you think my world view is pessimistic, you’re lucky as apparently you’re not on fire.

What I get out of life?, what i want out of life?, the value of life?, the behoof of life?

I can see the bigger picture, put things in perspective, rationalise, and occasionally play things down and still i get angry. Why?

Reflection

Very intensively I worked on my project ‘the hike’. I’m walking from my home in the Netherlands via Belgium and Luxemburg into France. Almost each weekend I add a bit, creating pictures along the way. A lot of themes to think about and mingle into a series that record the experience: fatigue, achievement, survival, solitude, pain, weather influences, creativity, originality, beauty, the track, the environment, but also how am I going to present it when the project is finished.

The outcome is definitely more than just a couple of nice pictures. And I want to bring that to the footlight. But how are the pictures viewed?  I’m struggling with likes on social media and comments like ‘some of the pictures are beautiful’. How to make people understand? I put a lot in the pictures, they are very personal. They show more and more my vision, I see a style developing. The expectations with the type of photography I shoot are like a kind of stray jacket. For example you can’t open a magazine and see a picture of a landscape without a purple-red sky.

People creating street photography, portraits or social photography seem to have more freedom. Unfortunately shooting people is not what I want to do.

The Hike

A selection showcasing the diversity of pictures

(I didn’t include pictures taken during sunrise as I used them for exercise 4.5)

The Hike – attempting spontaneity, playfulness and atmospheric impressions during perseverance and solitude – A project in progress

At first I had pain as a motivator as well:’………. during perseverance, pain and solitude’, but pain had too much negative negotiations for me. I want a positive project and I want people to understand. I think too many people wouldn’t be able to associate pain with pleasure. Pain during a long distance hike is easy to imagine. That the emotional value of highlights is bigger, in other words no highs without lows, is more difficult to translate into visual code.

I’m following the GR5 route which is part of the E2 from Inverness in Scotland to Nice in France. The end of November I will have walked from the North Sea near Hoek van Holland in the Netherlands, via the Kempen and Ardennes in Belgium, through Luxembourg.

Currently I present some pictures on Instagram. I post one picture a day.

The main concept is ‘the experience of the hike’, but I’ll split this in sub-projects: Perseverance, Solitude and Impressions. Impressions will be further divided in multiple categories.

Reflection

The ‘long distance hiking’-project has for now the working title “The Hike”. It’s an ongoing project. I wrote a separate post on it. I started that project with an idea and a basic concept. And it’s very interesting to see that develop. I haven’t fit the project in the course yet, but I’ll surely do with at least a part of it. I’ll write about it in a separate post.

Shooting from a concept where beauty is a substantiation instead of a goal is a liberation for me. Until now I focussed on technique and the-art-uninformed-aesthetics. It feels like a break through in my artistic development.
